Episode 50: Back On Campus
Hard to believe, but the Stoutcast has turned 50… 50 episodes, that is. Coincidentally, so has its founder… in years. Neither feels a day over 47. To celebrate, Campus Brewing owner David Weiss, brewer of one of the Episode 1 stouts, hosts us again as Professor of Beerology. Come along with us as we sample some of his offerings and he waxes poetically about crafting beer, consumer knowledge, and quality regarding his own suds and the two very different offerings we brought to class. This is another Zoom affair with three people six feet apart and the rest of the gang all over the damned place. Join Stoutcast Omega Malta frat brothers Bob Moffitt, Chris Knapp, Dan Scott, Glenn Crim, and Joey Gonzalez, and the aforementioned Mr. Weiss for some wildly different stouts, with visits from Jennifer Aniston, Paul Simon, and a cast of thousands… you included. Hear it all here in the podcast!!!
Bravus Brewing “Oatmeal” Non-alcoholic <.5% abv
Bob: Cans turn into barrels if they get too cold. I absolutely applaud the effort, which gets it a GOOD. Keep in mind it’s trying to taste like a stout without being one. Kind of like a golden…
Dan: Doesn’t taste like a stout at first. FAIR
David: I find non-alcoholic pretty watery. Expecting the worst. I’m creating a new grade for non-alcoholic beers vs alcoholic beers. FAIR/CAT. Hard to compare to the real thing.
Joey: Thin. What is this again? FAIR
Knapp: Cold coffee essentially. FAIR.
Glenn: I’m confused. Great for beer pong. GOOD.
Altamont “Nutty Operator” Peanut Butter Oatmeal 5.8% abv
Bob: Is that Humpty Hump on the Can? Promises Reese’s. Complex. Layers. VERY GOOD/EXCELLENT
Dan: Smells great. Promises not delivered. GOOD.
Knapp: Big coffee/bitterness GOOD.
David: GOOD. I’m getting old-school peanut butter. Chocolate is missing. Could be sweeter.
Glenn: My first PB stout. Doesn’t deliver what’s promised, but it’s still GOOD.
Joey: GOOD/VERY GOOD. I like the lack of sweetness. Gives me hope for this genre.
Campus “The Original Adjunct King” Oatmeal 6% abv
David: Oats are the original.
Bob: This has got some adjunct in the trunk. Really smooth. Next time David says “mouth feel” he owes us all a sixer of this. VERY GOOD/EXCELLENT
Joey: Delivers. Love the aroma and the taste. VERY GOOD/EXCELLENT
Knapp: VERY GOOD/EXCELLENT. Growler-worthy.
Dan: Very drinkable. VERY GOOD/EXCELLENT
Campus “Black Is Beautiful” Imperial 10% abv
David: We mixed the Marcus Baskerville/Weathered Souls recipe with some imperial we had to blend out some of the bitterness. Proceeds go to a good cause.
Bob: GOOD/VERY GOOD. I taste both. Happy for the adaptation.
Joey: We don’t have really, really good, so VERY GOOD will have to do.
Dan: EXCELLENT. Of 10 different variations, this is my favorite
Chris: Complex. Happy for the changes. Bitter but GOOD.
Campus “Fight Me I’m Irish” Pastry 15% abv
David: Irish coffee-inspired with cocoa, mint leaves, Irish whiskey. Would have been nice to have poured this on St. Patrick’s Day. Wish it had more coffee and booze.
Dan: Hides the whiskey really well… too well, in fact. VERY GOOD/EXCELLENT
Bob: Comes at you in waves. Tons of flavor. Fireside chats. Awesome EXCELLENT
Knapp: Can I put “yes” on the scale? The whiskey is hiding and will knock you out if you’re not careful. VERY GOOD
Joey: It’s a sipper. Thick. GOOD.
