Episode 47: Deep In The Heart Of Texas
Here’s the scene: the Los Angeles Dodgers —down three games to two to the Atlanta Braves in the National League Championship Series— are playing Game 6 in nearby Arlington, TX. Our hosts: Donnie Ward, Sharon Moffitt Ward, Rachel Ward and one-time ward of the state, Bob Moffitt are blissfully unaware as to whether Uncle Bob will be able to use his ticket to Game 7 because the Antebellum Ale House is providing the perfect place to grab a snack and a beer as the DVR does its thing. Though they can cut the tension with a knife, they can also cut the pizza-and-cheese whatever while they sample some of Texas’ darkest beverages and Sharon discovers that —like her kid brother— maybe stouts aren’t so bad after all. Texas Ale Project “Caucasian” Russian Imperial 9% abv
Brewed on the premise of giving the “Big Lebowski” a stout version of a White Russian. Promises coffee, dude.
Donnie. It’s stout-like, unexpectedly sweet. Kinda crunchy with the chips I’m eating. GOOD.
Sharon. I like it and I don’t like stouts. GOOD
Rachel: sweet, like caramel. Non-offensive aftertaste. GOOD
Bob: Smooth, nicely-concocted “golden” taste is better than fair-to-middlin’ but off-putting aftertaste brings it down to GOOD.
Left Hand Russian Imperial. 10.2 % abv.
Promises velvet chocolate cake, fruit and hops at the end.
Sharon. This is not a good face I’m making. CAT
Rachel: I’m getting licorice. Not enough cocoa. VERY GOOD, but then again, I don’t put ranch on pizza so I’m suspect..
Donnie. One note. Expecting a little bite. Better than fair, so GOOD.
Bob: Unappealing aftertaste. very disappointed. Meh. FAIR/GOOD. Wouldn’t turn it down if it were free.
903 Brewing “Friday Slide Car Bomb” Imperial 10.4& abv
Sharon: Smells heavenly. GOOD/VERY GOOD.
Bob: Sweet. Getting the Irish coffee and a little heat. Little over-roasted. GOOD/VERY GOOD
Donnie. Strong on the Baileys. Not getting an aftertaste but that could be because Texas pizza kills everything, including the ‘Rona. VERY GOOD.
Rachel: FAIR/GOOD. Oy the aftertaste.
903 Brewing “Treat Yoself” Double Milk 14% abv
Bob. Very Interesting. Multiple layers. It’s cough syrup-esque. No aftertaste. GOOD/VERY GOOD
Donnie. Fruity and complex, like the Ward women. VERY GOOD.
Rachel. Smells fruity. Great taste to start, then overpowering aftertaste. I’m confused. GOOD/VERY GOOD because of its layers.
Sharon. Not for me. CAT.
