North Coast Brewing Old #38 Dry Irish 5.4% abv

George: Lots of malt, a little coffee in the aroma, but not in the flavor GOOD

John: I’m a fan, super dry, not super heavy, a little caramel. VERY GOOD

Bob: Dry, lil’ sweet, maybe doesn’t deliver as much coffee VERY GOOD

(Editor’s note: California Alcohol Beverage Control Price Posting has answered a question asked in the podcast: a beverage in California does not require an alcohol by volume declaration if it is less than 5.7 percent.)

Guinness Antwerpen Foreign Extra 8.0 % abv

John: Funkily drinkable. POOR

George: Light bodied, a little citrus. “I could crush this” GOOD

Bob: Promises an “endless finish.” The problem is it’s endlessly funky. Drinkable, but… FAIR

Troegs Javahead Oatmeal Coffee 7.5%

Bob: Very fruity, funky, FAIR/POOR

John: Newspaper aroma from oxidation distracts. Bad bottling perhaps.

George: I couldn’t drink an entire one of these

Harviestoun Ola Dubh Black Barrel-Aged 8.0%

John: Missing a lot of body for the amount of alcohol. Bitter VERY GOOD

Bob: I like the beginning, the middle’s okay, and then the end is meh. Delivers what it promises. GOOD

George: Fruity. Pretty well-done. I like the bitterness GOOD/VERY GOOD

King Cong Clear Black Notes Barrel-Aged Imperial With Merlot 11.5% abv

John: Dark, merlot. Like an old vine Zin. Chocolate, roasty.

George: I waited for 6 months for this. Toffee notes subtle.

Bob: Complex, unlike anything, a sip-and-share. Wouldn’t drink a lot, but delivers what it promises. VERY GOOD
