What’s in the cask? What’s in the cask? Turns out it some hidden goodness that Urban Roots brew master Peter Hoey may not release to the public. Shame! Jorge Oseguera, Joey Gonzalez and Bob Moffitt try to get him to change his mind while all get to the bottom of some stouts that promise chocolate delights.

ZERO GRAVITY BLACK IRISH 

Peter: Delicate, coffee, nice finish. VERY GOOD.

Jorge: Barleyesque, missing the chocolate. GOOD for a light stout.

Joey: Thin. Summertime. Not my speed in winter. FAIR. 

Bob: Easy-drinking, fruity, little hoppy at the end. GOOD taste but short of what’s promised.

STONE BREWING XOCOVEZA MEXICAN HOT CHOCOLATE

Bob: For once, pleasantly surprised. Cheers to the guest brewer. Delivers peppers as promised. Missed the cinnamon. GOOD.

Peter: Enormously complex, cinnamon, pepper not overdone. Delivers what’s promised. GOOD/VERY GOOD. Not my style.

Jorge: Peppers, chocolate, not planning to buy it. Maybe too complex for me? FAIR

Joey: Chocolate, coffee, pepper, limited. FAIR/GOOD

FOUNDERS BREAKFAST OATMEAL 

Joey: Smells good. Lot of flavor, not overpowering, like the aftertaste, VERY GOOD. 

Bob: All coffee, no chocolate, hoppy aftertaste GOOD 

Jorge: Very drinkable, coffee VERY GOOD.

Peter: VERY GOOD body and texture, nice flavors and balance, harmonious.

BROOKLYN BREWERY BLACK CHOCOLATE

Jorge: Not getting much chocolate, little bitter, GOOD, but not my style.

Peter: Chocolate not intense, but drinkable for a 10% abv. VERY GOOD. 

Joey: Very light on the palate, a little one note with a little kick. Missing the chocolate. GOOD. 

Bob: Missing the chocolate, but everything combines to make a VERY GOOD beer.

URBAN ROOTS 2019 BASE IMPERIAL

Peter: This 13% monster will be used as our base for our other stouts. Will go well with toffee, bourbon, and soy sauce flavors. We are working on another imperial to release on its own.

Bob: Truly great taste, balance. EXCELLENT as a base beer now. If you make it better my head might explode. We’ll be back in a year.

Joey: Flavorful and syrupy. EXCELLENT. Can’t wait to taste the creations off of this.

Jorge: VERY GOOD/EXCELLENT. So drinkable now. Surprised by how smooth it is with how much alcohol is in it.
